Light Up publishes an issue monthly. We welcome submissions in our opinion, research, and creative writing section from students in high school and college. Please submit your article at no later than the last day of each month. We review and edit articles on a rolling basis.

Guidelines

Research

Could be on any topic of interest as long as it is either any one of the following:

  • Related to mental health or psychology

  • Related to a current/historical event and its relation to the psychological state of the mass at the time + how they overcame/could overcome the challenges (if applicable)

  • Should be around 5 pages (around 2500 words)

  • Should follow the following structure:

    • Title

    • Abstract (should be shortened in this case)

    • Introduction (should be shortened in this case)

    • Main body

      • Should cover the following:

        • Literature review (brief summary)

        • Methodology

        • Results

        • Discussion and evaluation

    • Conclusion

Opinion

  • Could be on any topic of interest as long as it is either any one of the following:

    • Related to mental health or psychology

    • Related to a current event and its relation to the psychological state of the mass at the time + how they overcame/could overcome the challenges (if applicable)

  • Should be no more than 800 words

  • Structure:

    • Introduction

      • Start with a Lede (a hook) - a tie into a current event or personal experience to attract the audience

      • Set up your argument

      • "Nut graph" - what is your overarching theme or argument?

    • The "Nut"

      • Express your main point as clearly as possible

      • Dissect the problem

      • Consider the other side of the argument

    • Coda: call to action and takeaway for the audience

Creative Writing

  • Could be on any topic of interest as long as it is either any one of the following:

    • An experience/story related to mental health or psychology

    • Any piece that could shed light to a mental health issue

  • Should be no more than 800 words

  • Could be but not limited to:

    • Fiction

    • Non-fiction

    • Poetry

    • Prose

    • Play

    • Songs/lyrics
